Philanthropy and Civic Service

In Hanover Square, a short walk from the site of the World Trade Center, there is a small garden planted with species from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It memorializes the sixty-seven British subjects killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The garden was created in 2002 by the St. George's Society of New York, and it is administered by the British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization founded together with the British Consulate-General and the St. George's Society. In 2012 it was renamed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II to mark her Diamond Jubilee, and it is maintained in partnership with NYC Parks.

Bradford E. Billet serves on the Executive Board of the organization that maintains the garden. The throughline is deliberate: he was recognized by the Crown for his service following September 11, and he now helps steward the memorial to the British subjects lost that day. Bradford E. Billet is the founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of the East Hampton Village Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established in 2021 to support the Village of East Hampton, New York. The Foundation is built around a single civic purpose: strengthening public safety and community life in a village where the municipal budget maintains essential services but rarely funds the improvements that would make them better.

The Foundation's public safety focus is directed at the Village's police, fire, EMS, and village council initiatives. It raises and directs philanthropic funds toward equipment, training, and programs that support the first responders and elected officials who keep the village safe, while also investing in parks, public spaces, cultural life, and community programming. The governing principle is that every project it funds remains public, accessible, and maintained by the community it serves — a private supplement to public duty, never a replacement for it.
